Interested in hitting the hunting trail? Get educated first.

It’s important that anyone hoping to hit the hunting trail has put in the time to educate themselves on hunting ethics and hunting safety.

Black bear season in NYS ranges from mid-September to early December.

NYSDEC (New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation) oversees numerous hunting and trapping seasons in New York State throughout the fall and winter: deer, black bear, turkey, ruffled grouse and more. There’s some training and licensing that must take place before heading out to hunt, however.

“The NY Hunter Education course (Hunter Safety course) is required to purchase a hunting license in New York. The course covers the necessary safety techniques and responsibilities that a hunter must know when using a gun, muzzleloader, crossbow, or bow to pursue wild game,” states dec.ny.gov.

The homework worksheet must be completed prior to taking the in-person portion of the class. The materials can be downloaded here, or, as prompted, one can visit their local DEC office to pick up a hard copy. DEC offices local to Country Culture’s circulation area can be found here: Region 4: Montgomery, Otsego, Schoharie; Region 5: Fulton; Region 6: Herkimer, Oneida.

As noted on the website: “In-person courses are offered throughout the year, however most of the courses are taught between March and September.” Though options are limited, there are still opportunities available this fall (thus far) with classes in Clifton Park, Greenville, Newport, Ephratah, Galway, Schenectady, Ballston Spa and Ohio. Visit here to learn more.

Once all first-time hunters have completed the hunter education course, a hunting license can be purchased in-person at a “license issuing agent location.” It can also be purchased online or by phone. Immediate licensing fees range from $5-22; fees are considerably higher for non-residents of NYS. Visit here to learn more.

Get the education you need so you can have a responsible, well-planned experience on the hunting trail. Have fun out there!
