Snowshoeing to be offered at Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center & Schoharie Crossing

AMBOY, NY – The Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center would like to announce its program Snowshoe Wanders, happening Sunday afternoon, Feb. 22, from 3 – 4:30 p.m.

If a person is able to walk, they can learn to snowshoe; there are snowshoes to fit all ages. A pair of snowshoes opens up a plethora of winter walking options along scenic snow-covered trails, so come give it a try.

Participants will begin indoors before gearing up for the walk. They will learn how snowshoes came into use and watch a demonstration of how to put them on and take them off. Once outside, assistance can be provided in strapping on the snowshoes. Participants will then receive a few tips on how best to move about in their snowshoes before setting out through the winter woods on a guided exploration.

This program offers a unique opportunity to try out a new method of travel during a time of year when it can be trickier to go for hikes. Snowshoes offer a way to get outside no matter how tall the snowdrifts are. Already own snowshoes? Not a problem! Participants are welcome to bring their own.

The program fee is $4/person and up to $12/family, whether one chooses to use the center’s snowshoes or bring their own. Advanced registration is encouraged, as space is limited. This program is designed for individuals or families, not organized groups. To arrange a group program, call the Oswego County 4-H Program at 315.963.7286.

To register for this program, visit https://reg.cce.cornell.edu/SnowshoeWanders2_235. For questions or more information, contact Katrina Relyea, 4-H natural resources educator with the Oswego County 4-H Office, at 315.963.7286 ext. 401 or kmr276@cornell.edu.

More locally, Schoharie Crossing in Fort Hunter is also hosting an “Introduction to Snowshoeing” class on Feb. 12. Find more information on their Facebook page.
