Boost wildlife habitats this summer: Three simple steps to thriving land

If attracting more deer, turkey and quail – or even just watching a healthier variety of wildlife – is on your radar this season, now’s the time to get started. Autumn isn’t just harvest season; it’s a golden window to enhance your land’s habitat so it supports the wildlife you love for years to come.

Here are three simple improvements you can make this autumn:

  1. Prep summer food plots – Warm-season plantings like soybeans, cowpeas and sorghum provide great summer forage for deer, turkey and more. Bonus: prepping now gets you ahead for fall food plots too.
  2. Feather your forest edges – Transition zones between woods and open areas are prime real estate for wildlife. By thinning or “softening” these edges, you create better bedding cover and more browse – especially for deer and quail.
  3. Selectively thin your timber – An overcrowded stand might look lush, but dense canopy blocks sunlight – meaning little ground cover, poor nesting habitat and fewer food sources. Thinning allows light in, which helps native vegetation and wildlife thrive.

Proverbs 12:10 reminds us “The righteous care for the needs of their animals…” and that includes the wild ones entrusted to our forests.

Need help creating a habitat strategy tailored to your land? Registered foresters and land management consultants work with landowners to craft wildlife plans that align with your property goals, whether it’s for hunting, conservation or legacy.
